Today was one of those days when I just had to enjoy a good walk, the golf gods however were not with me! NMTech is located in Socorro, NM 73 miles South of Albuquerque. The course was founded in 1953 and designed by James E Voss. It measures 6596 from the tips, the slope and rating are 129/71. Sabino Guijalva is the Head Pro and is rated PGA A-4. Top 10 public course in NM, and top 500 Nationally! See the attached photos for more information. I’ve got to start with the greens which are Bermuda and lightning fast! The Par 4 6th hole was unstoppable! If you were above the hole, that is. Miss the hole and it’s rolling 20 yards back down the fairway. Many of the greens on this course are elevated with false fronts; once again, stay below the hole! The fairways were in fair condition with some rough spots where the Bermuda didn’t survive the season. The tee boxes really left a lot to be desired, they were really chewed up and devoid of grass in many instances. The pace of play was excellent, we walked and there was no one ahead or behind us. Tee times at Tech are normally not hard to come by. Socorro is a small town and not a lot of folks’ travel to play down here. There are easier walks, but the course is not terribly hard to stroll. You will notice quite a contrast between the front and back nine. This course has abundant dog legs, and will require both a draw and a fade if you want to be well positioned, which leaves me out of luck! A yardage book is available in the Pro Shop which helps tremendously, especially if your new to the course! Enjoy!
